"Do It Yourself " (DIY)*
Our antebellum home, the
Daniel Carter Beard
House is one of two
National
Historic Landmarks in Northern Kentucky It was built in 1821 and expanded sometime
prior to 1861.
Retrofitting
existing buildings with new infrastructure has always presented challenges. Installing modern home automation and environmental monitoring
systems is no exception.
The first lighting
retrofit of the house was to add gas light, probably sometime during
the 1870's The second may have been
to complement the gas lights with electric ones -- perhaps to the puzzlement
of folks still trying to figger out how the 'lectricity was going to flow
through a pipe with no hole.
The 19th Century fin-de- siècle
approach to modernization was -- as it was at the turn of the
last century -- to find someone to do it
who has it figgered out and avoid them folks what haven't.
Plus ça
change ...
Or --better yet --"Do It
Yourself " (DIY*) in the spirit of "Uncle Dan" Beard.
